During my time as a designer on the marketing team at America’s Test Kitchen I often took on odd jobs to help out. I enjoyed tackling each new challenge, from designing social media ads to creating props for the TV show.
Ads for Social Media
These ads are designed to promote America’s Test Kitchen’s magazines Cook’s Country and Cook’s Illustrated on Facebook and Instagram. I spent hours combing through photography for each magazine and picking out which eye-catching shots I wanted to use.
Art Direction
for Photoshoots
America’s Test Kitchen has an in-house photography studio and pre-pandemic I assisted on photoshoots for The Well-Equipped Cook, a weekly newsletter about equipment. A coworker and I work with a photographer to capture images of the equipment collections featured in the newsletters. We plan the food, pick out dishware, arrange the equipment for the shot and even hand model if needed.
Food Props for TV
Perhaps the oddest job I’ve taken on at America’s Test Kitchen was to create fake versions of ingredients to be used as props on the TV show. This involves taking the real product, designing a similar label with a generic name, and printing it on sticker paper to cover the original product.
